Davidson wrestling made a come back Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, NC. The Wildcats broke their 16-match losing streak with a win over Millersville 24-20. Davidson kept the lead through the entire match. The Wildcats claimed the 125-pound fight by forfeit, but Joshua Ruppert of Millersville evened the match with a pin at 133 pounds. Davidson answered back to give the Wildcats a 6 point lead with Ben Hartshorn and Kevin Birmingham '15 winning at both the 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Unfortunately, Millersville took another win by fall at 157 pounds leaving the match at 12-12. Tyler Mullen '12 at 165 pounds brought the Wildcats back with an 8-7 victory over Brandon Vernalli of Millersville, but after unsportsmanlike conduct, a one point deduction was taken from the ‘Cats leaving the score at 14-12. At 174 pounds, Ian Solcz '15 won an 11-6 decision but Millersville answered back at 184 pounds. Finally at 197 pounds, Ed Isola ‘15 secured the match for the Wildcats with a win over Joel Suter of Millersville with a pin in 1:47. The freshman brought the team to a 24-20 victory over Millersville.
The wrestling team extended their winning streak Tuesday night in a tri-meet against Anderson University and St. Andrews in Belk Arena. Against Anderson, Zarth started the Wildcats out with a victory. Elias and Hartshorn also followed with wins, giving Davidson an early 15-0 lead. Mullen and Scolz victories gave the Wildcats a 22-9 advantage. Cirenza forfeited at 184 pounds, then Isola got 10-5 decision at 197. Then, Scott Patrick won the heavyweight match by forfeit for the final 37-9 margin.
Against St. Andrews, Zarth earned a major decision. At 153 pounds, CT Talevi'14 fought to a 6-3 decision.
The wrestling team looks to continue their winning streak against The Citadel this Saturday in Belk Arena.
