Nicky Kunz ’15 returns the ball to his opponent. Kunz’s victories were key to the team’s success.

Looking to end their home stand with a win, the Wildcats did just that against Campbell University on Saturday.  In a match that was down to the wire, Nicky Kunz '15 provided the winning point to wrap it up.

Davidson took the first point with the powerful duo of Joe Schafer '13 and Calum Gee '12 picking up the doubles victory 9-7 to improve their record to 4-1 on the year.  Connor Evins '14 and Chris Mark '13 also won in doubles play, downing their opponents 9-8 in a hard fought match.

In singles play, Evins picked up another point for the 'Cats with a big 6-3, 6-4 victory.  However, a rally by Campbell put them on the verge of clinching the match with a 3-2 team lead.

Not to be outdone, the Wildcats persevered and struck back fiercely in a tight situation.  Robert Lightbourn '14 began the comeback.  After dropping his first set 0-6, he regrouped, and with the match on the line, played an outstanding 2nd set, winning 7-6.  Riding the change in momentum, he wore down his opponent and cruised in the final set, 6-1.

Equally as impressive was Kunz's match.  With the team score tied 3-3, Kunz was defeated in the 1st set 5-7.  He fought back hard and took the 2nd set by a score of 7-5.  Similar to Lightbourn, Kunz took advantage of the momentum and broke his opponent in the final set 6-2 securing a Davidson victory.

The Wildcats' response to adversity in the match was impressive.  Equally as impressive was the composure showed by their younger players.  With the match one set away from being won in two different instances, both players regained their composure and never gave up until they had won.  Davidson ended their home stand with a win that brought them to 3-3 on the year.  Davidson begins a six-match road trip next weekend taking on rival Charlotte on February 23rd at 1pm.
