New pizzeria has popular opening weekend
When you think of the typical college diet, you envision late-night snacks and take-out, and pizza tops the list as the king of collegiate junk food. I heard that Davidson recently acquired a new pizza joint, and come Friday night, I knew I had to try it out.
This past weekend, the grand opening for the Davidson Pizza Company, I expected a few patrons for the six o'clock dinner rush, but I was wholly unprepared for the flurry of activity that I encountered at the fledgling restaurant. Well, perhaps "restaurant" isn't the correct term here. The pizza company operates out of a tiny renovated building behind Ada Jenkins and only provides carry-out or delivery services; there was barely enough room inside for another couple and me to wait for our pizzas.
Though I worried that they wouldn't be able to find my order among the massive stacks of pizza boxes, the three staff members had created a kind of ordered chaos in the kitchen, and the phone was ringing off the hook with orders the entire time I waited. The menu boasts an impressive selection of specialty pizzas, including the Wildcat (a pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushroom, bell pepper, white onion, and mozzarella cheese pizza), which seemed to be the most popular, and delicious-looking Hawaiian pizza. If you aren't quite that adventurous, there are also New York-style pizzas to order with options for veggie and meat toppings. Building your own pizza can get pricey, though, unless you like a more simple pie. You can choose from 9" or 18" pizzas, calzones, or strombolis, and add garlic knots, bread, or a salad to any order.
My friends and I opted for an 18" New York style pizza with pepperoni and green peppers, and when I returned to the car they laughed as I struggled to fit into the front seat with the pizza on my lap. The cheese and toppings were piping hot and tasted fresh, though the sauce was a little skimpy. We barely noticed, though, because we were too busy raving about the crust. I'm a huge thin-crust fan and my friends are more thick-crust lovers, so we didn't expect to agree, but Davidson Pizza Company knows how to bake a perfect pizza.
We cleaned the box, but the four of us were stuffed afterward; two massive pieces is a meal for even the hungriest college kid. At a $16 split four ways, it's one of the cheapest, tastiest dinners you can find in Davidson. Check out their menu at www.davidsonpizza.com or like their new Facebook page to receive coupons and specials updates, and make a plan to go this weekend. You won't be disappointed.
