Men’s Tennis Beats Richmond, Brevard
Off to best start since 2003 season

On Saturday at the Knobloch Tennis Center, the Davidson men’s tennis team took on the visiting Richmond Spiders and the Brevard College Tornados. The ’Cats defeated Richmond by a score of 4-1 and Brevard by a score of 6-0. With the wins, the men’s tennis team improved its record to 5-1, it’s best start since the 2003 season.
The ’Cats opened the day with Richmond, winning three of the four singles matches that were played. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Nicky Kunz ’15 defeated Richmond’s Ethan Dunbar 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. Joe Schafer ’13 won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot for his fourth win in a row. The ’Cats picked up their third singles win in No. 4 singles when Robert Lightbourn ’14 won 6-7, 6-2, 6-0. Davidson also won two of the three doubles matches against Richmond. In the No. 1 doubles spot, Chris Mark ’13 and Kevin Moore ’13 won a close match by the score of 8-7. Schafer and Ethan Kallick ’14 earned an 8-4 win in No. 2 doubles to give the ’Cats a 4-1 win against Richmond.
After defeating Richmond, the ’Cats took on Brevard College, winning all five singles matches and both doubles matches to pick up the 6-0 win. Kunz picked up his second win of the day in No. 1 singles winning 6-2, 6-4. Connor Evins ’14, playing in the No. 2 spot, earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory. In No. 3 singles, Alex Howard ’16 earned his second collegiate win defeating Stefano Giovanolli 6-2, 6-0. Roger Irigoyen Berlanga ’15 earned his second collegiate win as well in the No. 4 spot by winning 6-0, 6-2. Kallick picked up his first singles win of the year in the No. 5 spot, easily winning 6-0, 6-1. The No. 1 doubles pairing of Lightbourn and Kunz won 8-5 to improve to 3-1 on the year. Finally, Howard and Evins won 8-2 in No. 2 doubles to earn their first doubles win as a pair this year.
The ’Cats return to action on Wednesday, February 20th , when they host Belmont Abbey at 5pm.
