When we return from Spring Break, Davidson will finish its 2009-2010 C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series with a visit from Thodos Dance Chicago, a professional dance company. Gamut, Davidson's own student dance group, will make an appearance in Thodos' program as well. The show is Wednesday, March 10th at 8:00 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall. Tickets are $8 for students.
On their website, Thodos describes themselves as a "contemporary dance company with a vibrant, award-winning style." The group members not only dance but also choreograph and teach. In addition to appearing in 10 states, they have performed for international festivals in Scotland, Turkey and Korea.
The show features three dances by the late Bob Fosse, a world renowned American choreographer. During his lifetime, Fosse won eight Tony awards for his work. Each piece in the Davidson show has never been performed on stage. Viewers can anticpate an evening full of creativity and originality.
Though they will not actually dance on stage at the same time as Thodos members, the Gamut members are excited for next month's show. Melissa Thodos, the founder of the vising group, created a called "Continum" for Gamut in a workshop.
All ten of Gamut's members cut their winter breaks short to return to Davidson so they could work with Thodos.
"We spent 16 hours with a professional choreographer who sincerely tried to bring out the best in us," said Diane Kaliris '11, Gamut's manager.
Kaliris also mused upon the importance of the upcoming show. "We are such a young company and it is truly an honor to work with a professional company who reached out to us. I really hope everyone can come watch and see all the effort we have put into this piece."
